I am different with everyone I guess, I have watched (read the novel half way though) the movie this Once upon a time before the drama. but I was touched and moved by Yang Mi and Mark Chao's interpretation of the story and it came great. However, I like the movie better I know we're different majority. Spoilers alert. First and foremost the story itself, the drama and the movie was true to the novel (book) the drama was more detailed of everyone's character story unlike the movie that focuses on both main protagonist Bai Qian and Ye Hua as they (the production) made it to stand alone independent movie and that's quite great already as the novel on bigger picture was only about these two characters only. Second, the production team and CGI effects, the drama was cool to stay focus on fighting skills and settings with little CGI different to movie that most of settings were on CGI. BUT as I read the novel first and the manhua version, I choose the the movie better as it portrayed the heavenly, majestic and superb fantasy settings and effects of the book though it was all CGI it was great as most Chinese movies were all the same using CGI. Third, the characters Bai Qian and Ye Hua. Yang Mi and Mark Chao's portrayal was really on to drama. Yang Mi was very good on the 3 characters (but it came similarly those 3 characters coming from her, whilst Mark Chao was great too (but for me he came and looked old for Ye Hua. Liu Yi Fei's interpratation was more similar to the book, her different 3 characters was portrayed differently (she did so well giving justice to that scream Ye Hua part Nooo, Ye Hua Nooo! on the Bell sealing. As a High Goddess she came fearless looking and that's what I'm looking for I guess. Yang Yang's especially he was young he was more fitted to the image of Ye Hua as a young prince and He did so so so well on Ye Hua's character. Don't hate but I have different opinion and interpretation and expectation to the book itself as a Romance, Fantasy novel. So the movie was a movie interpretation and I have nothing against the so called 50+ episodes shortened to 2 hours, it was more than that and came excellent. Of course the introduction or the start of the movie was not hard or confused for me as I never watched the drama first but the novel and it was similar to that and the story goes on so I wasn't confused hardly with flow of the movie. (As it was supposed to be thrilling) So yeah I made it straight to the point that the movie was short, precise, brief, focused on the main characters, an antagonist, the bell and their love story in 3 lifetimes. It was made into movie and it came excellent. wether I'm talking subjectively or objectively for me it was more on objectively as a movie. So better watch the movie again as I was like, Nooo I want more! perhaps make it to 3 hours. So do please watch the movie again.
